A private chef anywhere in the Town of Bethlehem
Bethlehem isn't one place so much as a handful of hamlets that share one town government. Delmar gets most of the attention, and it has its own private chef page. This page is for everyone else: Slingerlands on the New Scotland side, Elsmere tucked between Delmar and Albany, and Glenmont and Selkirk stretching south toward the river.
The service is the same wherever you live. Most bookings include planning a menu, shopping, cooking in your kitchen, serving and cleanup, though you'll confirm the details with your chef. What changes from hamlet to hamlet is the kind of dinner people tend to host.
Slingerlands dinners for two and small dinner parties
Slingerlands has a lot of houses where the dining table seats six comfortably and the kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. That's the right size for the most personal bookings: an anniversary for two, a milestone birthday with a few close friends, or a dinner to welcome new neighbors.
Small tables get more from a chef, not less. With four guests instead of twelve, there's time for an extra course, a plated dessert, or a dish finished at the table.
Tell the chef about the occasion, not just the headcount. An anniversary menu might revisit the dinner from your wedding; a birthday might mean the guest of honor's favorite dish, done properly. If you've been saving a special bottle, tell the chef and the menu can be built around it.
For larger groups, our dinner party chef page covers menu size and when family-style beats plated.
Glenmont and Selkirk backyard dinners: private chef or catering?
The southern end of town has more room: bigger yards, decks and lawns that fill up in June with graduation open houses and summer parties. That raises a fair question, which is whether you need a chef or a caterer.
Our rule of thumb: if guests sit down together at a set time, a private chef fits. A rehearsal-style dinner on the deck, a summer birthday for fourteen, a Fourth of July cookout with real sides. If people come and go over four hours and the headcount is fifty or more, that's a catering job. Many Glenmont and Selkirk families do both: a caterer for the open house, then a chef for the close-family dinner the night before. Our guide to private chef vs catering goes deeper on where the line falls.
A seasonal dinner menu after a Five Rivers walk
Five Rivers Environmental Education Center is one of the best things about living in Bethlehem: miles of trails, ponds and fields a few minutes from home. A morning there in October sets up the perfect dinner: squash, apples, root vegetables, a slow roast, something warm for dessert.
Ask the chef to cook with the season. Late summer means tomatoes and sweet corn; fall means braises and orchard fruit. A menu built on what's local and in season usually tastes better than one built on a wish list.
Bethlehem borders New Scotland too, so we also cover Voorheesville. When you have a date, book a private chef or call (518) 765-7832.
